All the News That's Fit to Print ...
and then some :)

Well, my mom is improving. She's still bedridden, but she's got the twinkle back in her eye. She gets several visits a week from occupational therapists, physical therapists, and visiting nurses. She's even got a nurse's aid (Nancy) who comes three times a week to give her a bed bath. I'm still doing all the cooking and cleaning around here - but at least my mom now has help for certain things (and people to socialize with), and now I can get a few minutes to myself (like I have right now) to read, or get online, or maybe grab a cat nap.

I'm still job hunting - got a whole slew of places to send resumes to (and should be doing that right now, but I felt more like doing this). I also have my first interview set up for next week. It's not exactly my dream job, but it is in the sense that at this moment i dream of any job that will pay me, LOL:)

I am in love with shopping at Gigante!! It's this great little chain of stores here in So Cal (and in Mexico) complete with it's own Panaderia and Carniceria. Discovered it through a flyer that came in the mail a couple weeks ago. We've been gorging ourselves on pan dulce ever since. They make the best conchas (3/$1) and bolillos (6/$1) I've ever had. And the chorizo from the carniceria is to die for yummy!!! And everything is so much cheaper and fresher there than anywhere else around here. The bolillos at Ralphs are 3/$1, and (this week anyway) at Albertsons avocado is going for 2/$1 and kiwis are 3/$1, but they're 4/$1 and 8/$1, respectively, at Gigante. Now, you know perfectly well that all that produce came from the same field!

I hooked up the DVD player yesterday (it's been sitting there next to the tv since we moved). My dad was going to do it, but never got around to it, so yesterday afternoon, when I couldn't stand it anymore, I plugged all the thingies into all the appropriate slots - bingo bango, a functioning DVD player. We watched two movies last night, before it was time for Cold Case (I love that show) and the ever glorious Battlestar (which they stupidly moved to Sundays - pissing me off royally!). I will blog about the movies in the near future, but right now my online respite has come to a close - back to the salt mines! ;)

The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things

Saw this a couple weeks ago on the cable company's On Demand channel (free, courtesy of Sundance Channel, bless them), thought it was pretty good.
Giving it 3 stars at Netflix.

The Art of Being the Last Lemming
I'm weird.

It's ok to say it out loud, or nod your head in agreement.

I know it's true.

And I'm ok with that fact - that, in fact, is THE WEIRDEST thing about me, LOL :)

I have this ingrained , yet inexplicable, aversion for anything "popular". And I don't mean that in a snobby way (though that's probably how it sounds). I don't mean that I pass judgment on things - deciding that if it's popular it's beneath me. I just know, through all these cumulative years in my skin, that when something appeals to EVERYONE, it's generally a mystery to me as to why.

I like what I like.

Sometimes I like things BEFORE they're popular - which provides licence to feel tres hip for 5 minutes, once everyone else catches on (which can take years). Sometimes I like things AFTER they're already considered passe - then I'm prevailed upon to defend my general lameness (a task too monumental to ever be completed, so I usually don't bother to start). But for some reason I'm always either early or late to the party. I find my own little path to things, and somehow always miss the wave.

And why do I drone on and on about this?

Because, ladies and gentlemen, this past week, for the first time in my life, I watched American Idol ...... and I liked it.

Now don't get me wrong - I'm not into watching hapless humans get ridiculed for the way they look (that's just mean), but there's a mesmerizing train-wreck quality to all the tone-deaf contestants. When I wasn't cringing, my chin stayed firmly planted on my chest - mouth agape at the spectacle. I swear, I always thought that EVERYONE could sing - that it's just a matter of finding the right song for your voice. Maybe you sing like Maria Callas, maybe it's more like Johnny Cash, but somewhere in there, there's a song for everyone.

BOY WAS I WRONG ;)

ps ... I still hate Ryan Seacrest.
